I'm a retired RN. When working in the hospital I found that other nurses were will to watch your patients if you need a smoke but not if you needed to just sit for 5 minutes. Nurses rarely get lunch or bathroom breaks. They are too busy. But smoking yeah. someone will watch your patients for the 10-15 minutes it takes to get to a smoking area and smoke a cig then get back to the floor. Sigh. I just went and had a nice bathroom break. Sometimes it was the only one I got on a 12 hour shift.

I don't know if other jobs are like this but nursing sure was.

Worked with a guy years ago that refused to poop at home during the week. He liked to get paid to poop. And yeah a 10 min break a day adds up to 40 hours a year.

My friend is a smoker and she goes to work 30 minutes earlier every day, so she doesn’t work less because of her smoke breaks.

    Incentive, rather than punishment.

But what if you were a smoker but never took smoke breaks at work?

We shouldn’t celebrate Japanese work ethic, change my mind.

As a light smoker (maybe 5 a day), I don't have a problem with this. However, even if I didn't smoke, I still need to get up and away from my desk at regular intervals to clear my head. Just because I'm out smoking doesn't mean I'm ignoring my job. Sometimes I solve the problem precisely because I walked away for a few minutes.

What "company"? Just a company? This seems like total bs

They also need to consider that a small group is just trying to take a break, smoking is just the face-value excuse.

So if you want to take away an entire year's worth of "5 min breaks" into 6 days, i doubt the company is increasing efficiency of workplace. People take breaks. If you force them not to, it's not like they're suddenly churning out 6 days worth of work for not taking a break.

If a company really is serious about 100% utilization of time, they need robots, not people.

Ahhh I miss my smoke breaks. Since I quit, I just go for walks around the block instead. But I still find a reason to get away for a minute.

No one should be shamed for needing a breather at work, regardless of the reason.

Given it's Japan those non smokers likely never see those days off and are pressured into working anyway despite on paper having vacation days

6 extra vacation days and a shit load more stress, or a shot load less stress and no extra vacation days. Yeah, I’ll take a shit less stress every time.

I work at a convenience store and jesus they’re right about it adding up. Usually 2-3 people are working at a time, and most of my coworkers smoke. This means that most of the time when I’m working I will literally get no time for breaks. An 8 hour shift and most of the time I don’t get even a 5 minute break, because when the store is slow the others are out smoking and someone has to stay in. And we both get paid the same amount for that time. Kill me.

Ok... Here in Washington everyone is legally entitled to regular breaks in the first place.

Where I did an internship, smokers simply clocked out for their smoke breaks.

I just walk out with the smokers and stand near them. I get some "fresh" air and relax for a minute or 2. When they head back to work, i head back to work. Seems fair to me.

This is glorious. I hate that it is deemed unnecessary for me to take 10 minute breaks every hour to do nothing, but smokers don't have an eye batted at them for doing the same.

They do this confident in their knowledge that none of them are going to take their vacation time anyway.

A company I worked at for several years in Kanagawa had a smoking room installed by Japan Tobacco. It’s good to see a company go the other way on this.

I’m sure it help some quit, but I’m sure it would also help if they didn’t have 70 hour work weeks and live in a shoebox.
